Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and language therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication problems and speech disorders. It is performed by speech-language pathologists (SLPs), which are often referred to as speech therapists. Some kids have trouble saying certain sounds or words. This can be frustrating because others may have trouble understanding what they’re trying to say.

Speech therapy techniques help to improve communication. These include articulation therapy, language intervention activities, and others depending on the type of speech or language disorder.

Articulation, Fluency, Resonance, Receptive, Expressive, Cognitive-communication are various speech disorders that can be corrected or improved by regular sessions of speech therapy. The approach used varies depending on the disorder. It may include physical exercise to strengthen the muscles used in speech (oral-motor work) speech drills to improve clarity or sound, or loudness and production practice to improve articulations and language parameters.

Speech-language pathologists work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social and cognitive communication, and swallowing disorders in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Speech and language program begins with an individual evaluation to assess an individual’s strengths and weakness in speech, language and communication. From this evaluation, the pathologist sets goals and works on Receptive and Expressive languages of children with Autism.
